What is the FPP?
The Rappahannock Farmland Preservation Program (FPP) exists to purchase development rights on farmland in the County in exchange for a voluntary conservation easement. The landowner can continue to farm the land and can transfer the farm to heirs or another buyer, but the development restrictions remain with the land forever.
How much land has the FPP protected?
Over 686 acres since the first purchase in 2006.
How is the FPP funded?
The Commonwealth of Virginia is the largest single donor to the FPP. The Commonwealth has provided matching funds for all of RCCA donations and large sums from the Krebser Fund and individual donors.
When was the last purchase? Next purchase?
The last FPP purchase was completed in 2011. The landowner accepted a partial payment and donated the rest of an easement on 236 acres of working farmland. The next purchase is not yet planned, but will occur when there is enough money aggregated in the fund for an important and sizable purchase.
Who owns the land after an FPP purchase?
The FPP only purchases development rights on the land. The title to the farm, including the right to transfer and sell, remains with the landowner. A land trust will hold an easement on the land to ensure that the development restrictions are upheld forever.
Who can apply?
Anyone who actively farms in Rappahannock. The County is not currently accepting applications. If you would like to be notified when applications are being accepted, please contact the RCCA office at info@rccava.org or 540-987-9118. Click here to download the program requirements.
Is there a match from the Commonwealth?
Yes, when enough funds are available from the various contributions to the FPP, the County will apply for matching funds before any contributions are spent.
How can I donate?
You can send your tax-deductible check to RCCA and indicate that all of the funding is intended for the FPP. RCCA will include your donation to the FPP in our annual gift.
If I donate now, what happens to the money?
Money donated to the FPP is held by the County or by RCCA until a match is granted and/or there is enough money aggregated in the fund for an important and sizable purchase.
